Versatile. That is one
way to sum up Kathleen Holeman’s vocal abilities. She can croon a
ballad as if she wrote it, belt out a big band tune, cry the blues and
scat all over a standard.
She has listened to the masters and
created a sound all her own, while still being able to quote a style
from Billie H., Ella F. or Sarah V. to name a few. She can sing low
and smoky or high and pure. Versatile.

Meet Kathleen...
Kathleen grew up near King City, Missouri (a small town northeast of St.
Joseph & Kansas City MO) in a very musical family. Like her four
siblings before her, she took piano lessons, learned a band instrument
(trombone), and sang. She sang at school, at church and with her father
at home. She performed in a country and gospel band during her high
school years. During college years she was in country-rock, salsa and
jazz bands, including the Ray Alburn Big Band in St. Joseph, MO. All of
this exposed her to many different genres and eras of music. She
received a Bachelor of Instrumental Music Education with a vocal music
certification from Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, and
a Master of Arts in Music, focusing on jazz, from the University of
Missouri - Kansas City.
During most weekdays, Kathleen also
enjoys giving private instruction on piano, voice and trombone. She was
recently involved in a project at MWSU which involved offering guidance
to college musicians, as they entered into playing or singing jazz and
other genres as a profession.
Kathleen is the early service musician
at Francis Street First Methodist Church in St Joseph, also directing
men's, women's, and children's singing groups.
She is still a member of the Ray Alburn
Big Band, and performs in St. Joseph at Chloe & Bernard's, the Rear
View, and the Ground Round.
Kathleen also performs at many venues
in the Kansas City area, such as the Phoenix, Jardine's, The Club at
Plaza III Steakhouse, Ivy's, Johnny Cascones, and Benton's (at Westin
Crown Center). She performs often in the Lake of the Ozarks area.
She performed at the Topeka Jazz
Festival in May 2005, with the Indianapolis Jazz Orchestra in December
2005, and will be with the St Joseph Symphony in October 2006.
In 2003, she released a debut CD, "Don't
You Wonder?". Her next CD, "I'm All Smiles", came out in June 2005. Both
albums offer great musicians and a large variety of styles and
surprises, including several of Kathleen’s own compositions.
When Kathleen isn’t performing or teaching, she likes to garden, watch
baseball, read, and to be outdoors hiking, caving, etc. with her
husband. She also enjoys martial arts and yoga. She lives in an 1887
brick Itailianate with her husband and cats in St. Joseph.
